Crown Ethers

Ion Pair Receptors (Part II project with Prof. Paul Beer)

We aimed to combine a crown-ether for cation binding with bipyridine amides for anion coordination to create ion pair receptors. A transition metal complex provides a spectroscopic reporter group with which to interrogate ion binding using UV and fluorescence spectroscopy.

Binding of K+ and Cl- ions was investigated by NMR titrations and found to be cooperative. Ion pair binding in the solid state was demonstrated by x-ray crystallography.
