Notre Dame

Above and below: The cathedral of Notre-Dame. Construction started in 1163, although much of the elaborate stonework visible today was extensively restored in the 1800s. Some of the original scultpures from the cathedral are in the Musée du Moyen Age. It is possible to climb the tower to view the enormous bell.

Above left: The Basilica du Sacré-Cœur stands on a hilltop in the Montmartre district overlooking the city.

Left and below: The Hôtel des Invalides and Eglise du Dôme. This was a hospital and home for injured soldiers and part of it is now occupied by the army museum. Napoleon’s tomb is located in the church under the dome.
