The chain links are subpatch objects. The object was duplicated, the surface normals flipped and the copy combined with the original. The outer and inner surfaces were given refractive indices of 1.6 and 1.0 respectively. The scene is lit by a pair of area lights. Caustics are turned on for only one of them. The second acts as a fill and is responsible for the colouring of the background below the chain. It looks a little like radiosity, but is faster to render.
