Welcome to the James E. Redman web pages at kombyonyx.com
This site provides an overview of my chemistry research and interests. I am currently based at the School of Chemistry, Cardiff University where I am investigating the synthesis of unnatural amino acids and their incorporation into peptides by solid phase synthesis, small molecule recognition of folded nucleic acids, nucleic acid structure, engineering of DNA binding proteins and mass spectrometric structure determination of topologically peptides and analogues. My previous research at the University of Cambridge concerned quadruplex DNA, screening of nucleic acid ligands and synthesis of peptide-dye conjugates. My time prior to this at the Scripps Research Institute led to the development of the Sequence V1.5 program for sequencing cyclic peptides by mass spectrometry which is described at www.kombyonyx.com.
Other research interests have included 4-helix bundle peptides, supramolecular porphyrin chemistry and crown ether ion pair receptors.
At Cardiff University I am involved with teaching the undergraduate chemistry programmes and the MSc in Chemical-Biology. I am on the committee of the Royal Society of Chemistry South East Wales Local Section and the Bio-Organic interest group. The 2012 Bio-Organic Group postgraduate symposium will be taking place in Cardiff. I am treasurer and secretary of the European Symposium on Biological and Organic Chemistry (ESBOC), an annual meeting held at Gregynog Hall. The theme for the 2012 symposium is antibiotics.
